at my tiny lfs, where they dont know what a marine tank is and have very few stock, i noticed today that they are selling yamato shrimp!

now what do you feed them and are they best in groups or will they be ok on their own?

I've got 4 of them in my 10 gal, they're great fun to watch and will eat anything. Every so often they shed thier skin and it looks like 1 of them is dead. They're hard to breed as I've had mine 6 months and no sign of any young.

The young apparently need brackish water to survive - people have bred them, but either in mildly brackish tanks or tanks where they alternated fresh and brackish water at water changes. I have a very heavily pregnant female, so I've put her in a slightly brackish tank with my bumblebee gobies....dunno if this will work or not. Mine eat algae but I also chuck in crab pellets for them every couple of days - they need quite a lot of calcium and minerals to safely shed their shells and form new ones, and if your water is soft just algae won't do - crab pellets have the necessary apparently to keep them healthy.

I keep mine in groups, they can be quite timid but the larger they grow and the more buddies they have, the more you'll see them around! They climb and jump like rabbits too - so block off ALL openings in your tank!
