Just been given a new plec - due to an unfortunate relashiopnship break up of my best mates brother in law and wife
was brother in laws fish and now got no where to home him so he is living in my Rio 300

He is approx 5-6" but looking at other pics i've not seen many with a lyre tail - is this a common thing or not

He said they are quite expensive plecs - any idea on price as when i upgrade i would look at ordering another one - different sex (if they're not too expensive)

Think i need to upgrade tanks next year 5 or 6 ft

gorgeous fish
prob my favourite plec
I had a 9 inch for a couple of years till he got crushed by a piece of bog wood, i was so disappointed

they look really cooolhoovering round the tank in a frenz!!

I tried to replace mine but larger fish were about £80!! you did really well there, some baby ones I cold have got were £17 each

Thanks Simonas

Jeez dont think i'll get another adult one then

bump anyone know sex?

edited to remove caps sowwie

they are extremely hard to sex, and unless you were looking at trying to breed them, i wouldn't even guess at it.
they are gorgeous plecs, very under rated imo, they are very cheap to buy compared to all other pseuda's, but probably one of the prettier ones

I been trying to sex this plec without any luck he(i'll call him a he ) is doing exceptionally well now - he was only fed on algae wafers with previous owner
now he gets fed meaty food including bloodworm pellets , greenlipped mussle pellets earthworm pellets and live foods

he's coloured up nicely - only comes out hes cave 4-5 times a week and when he does hes colours are amazing - will try and take another pic when hes next out

I been looking at the prices and most start around £70 for this fish in a lfs and £60 from no fish stores - private breeders grrrrr need cheaper lol

theres a member on plecofanatics.com from manchester who breeds them and sells bout £15quid

they do regularly come up cheaper, as simon said, they are being bred in the uk, george and marina of mchportal.com (site is currently down) have bred them lots of times.
price wise, i wouldn't look at anything over £30, i have 2, 1 is 5", the other is 7" (sl) and i got one free, and paid £10 for the other.
watch places like aquarist classifieds for real bargains

yep (i think its greece anyway)

Lovely pics. I also have two of these beauties! I bought them from ebay for £35 with postage for the two of them at about 2inches. They are now both around the 4-5 inch mark and are very stricking. Thanks for putting up the link to the mchportal website!! Will be checking there to pic up a couple more.
