The LFS had him listed as a L092 but I've looked around and I can't find a pic that looks like him.

He is approx 3" long, and LFS said he'll grow to 4-5" max. I really hope he knows what he is talking about.

Hmmm...I see what you mean. According to Planetcatfish, the L092 is an ancistrus-looking thing, but yours looks almost more peckoltia-like.

Looks like what used to be called Peckoltia pulcher (or "clown plec") in the trade, though I think the Latin name used wasn't the right one.

Kept one many years ago (1980s) when they were fairly often sold. Shy, nocturnal, harmless little fish. Not especially common in the trade. For whatever reason, Ancistrus spp. appeared at the same time and went on to become hobby staples, but these didn't. Perhaps not as hardy or easy to breed.

Cheers,

Neale

If these are the ones now known as panaque maccus (was going to be panaquolus, but doesn't seem to have caught on), breeding sounds like harder work. That's probably why the ancistrus has beaten them, seeing that they breed like rabbits (yes, I know what you're doing in that cave right now, mr and mrs Spotty  ). Plus you see more of a bristlenose.

Exactly. I think these are small Panaque. The teeth are the giveaway, if you get to see one from underneath. If they are Panaque, then bogwood (or some other wood) in their diet is essential.

Oh, and re: Panaqolus. This was coined in an aquarium magazine rather than a scientific journal. Proposing a name doesn't mean anything unless it is adopted by the scientific community. Panaqolus doesn't seem to mean anything beyond the smaller species of Panaque, which is not the sort of distintinction scientific names are normally based on. My guess would be that's why the name hasn't caught on.

Cheers,

Neale

I looked up the Panaque maccus / clown / ringlet plec on planet catfish, and it seems you are right, thats my guy! Thank You! It also fits because ever since he arrived he has been munching on wood.. does this mean he won't eat the algae off my glass? LOL

My Panaque, P. nigrolineatus, basically ignores algae on the glass. Much prefers wood or veggie. But yours is a small species, so will likely eat some algae. Just don't expect miracles. Panaque are fascinating fish, but they are somewhat specialised, so you do need to extend a little more care than with, say, bristlenose plecs.

Cheers,

Neale

My money is on L129 - Columbia Zebra :)

We've got 5 of them (for sale if anyone is interested)

They are one of the smallest Hypancistrus (not Panaque or Pekoltia) at 3" it'll be adult :)

It doesn't look like a Columbian Zebra to me - the head says panaque maccus to me. Saying that there are a couple of similar small plecs.

markings and colouration are wrong for a clown plec...

Can you get a side on piccy to clear up head shape?
