Went for a visit to our lfs yesterday, and spotted some lovely Platinum Angels, we got 2. I just wanted to say on here, as I think they are so pretty and shiny! We've called them Snowy (original!) and Wally (my fiancee's choice!).

I haven't ever seen these angels before, the guy said they're quite hard to get hold of as it takes 2 different angel breeds to breed them! Does anyone know which 2 angels produce them?

Haven't got any pics of them yet, but will try and get some, I don't seem to have much luck in getting clear pics of my fish! Don't know how you guys do it!

There are a few theories as well as debates on the genetics behind platinums, and if it is a genuine genotype, or just a color variation, such color expression in koi. As is being done with discus, you could have hundreds of names for color variations which have no definite or proven to be repeatable genetic background.

Some say it is a color variation on gold, (g/g), which would give you two pale gold parents producing pale gold, or platinum angels. In this case it isn’t a new color allele, just a modification of one that already exists.

Another thought is a cross between an albino gold (g/g-a/a), and a silver ghost (S/+), which will give you 25% albino gold, 50% albino ghost, and 25% albino sunset blushing, is the genetics behind platinums. There is a very slight difference between these fish, but not much.

One more thought, just to add to the confusion, is that it is a separate homozygous recessive gene, being designated (gu/gu) by some. This is described as Asian platinum. This would mean it’s a new genetic variation, but being new it takes some time to be generally accepted.

The second genetic background is probably what is being referred to with your angels. Genetics with angels, like genetics with anything else, can get quite complex. For a little better understanding check out http://theangelfishsociety.org/genetics.htm
