I believe its a new species that has been discovered to be genetically diverse from others. In the paper it goes down to scale and fin ray counts as well as genetics and DNA

Word among people researching the wild Oscar group is that there may be more to come, as more is learned. It could end up as a complex of species, all closely related but diverged.
Aquarists will probably ignore that and go on crossing them, reducing the diversity as we usually do....
