Hi it is not the first time i have kept a marine tank i had one many years ago but back then didnt have as much money etc and made loads of mistakes and tryed cutting corners etc. Now i am older and wiser i have taken my time with this set up it is a 150uk gal tank, i have 2 rena xp3 external filters running on it, a tmc v2 skimmer, i dont have any live rock yet still waiting for it to arrive.

Anyway cut to the chase, i set the tank up on monday all ok i have a salinity reading of 1.024, done a test last night(i know its early for that), ammonia=0, nitrite=0 nitrate=10 and ph is 8.0 my problem is the water seems almost yellow and has a milky look to it almost as if i had put unsoaked bogwood in a fw tank and i have noticed this morning the water is fairly smelly, i cant understand it never had a problem like this before on any tank whether fw or sw. all of the ocean rock in the tank and i have a galleon ornament are from my old cichlid setup but both have been washed and scrubbed thouroughly and the filters have been washed and scrubbed well everything has including the tank, any help please.

cheers stewy

Welcom back to the hobby. First could I ask some questions

1) What are you running in the externals?
2) What are you using for water movement?
3) Why are you using ocean rock not Live rock?
4) What substrate are you using?
5) What water are you using?
6) Did you use any medication in the tank when it was in use as a FW set-up?

What water are you using? Running carbon may help clean up the color.

I would have gone for a algea/phytoplakton bloom. The latter if natural sea water (NSW) was used. As Ski said get some Carbon in there and test for ammonia (NH3/4),Nitrite (NO2),Nitrate (NO3) and Phosphate (PO4).

Just my thinking here guys, but wouldn't he have had to have used tapwater for there to be a nitrate reading of 10? :S

Also, the ocean rock... where did that come from? Maybe it is leaching something dodgy... :X

hi guys thanks for the replys, sorry i missed that questiion i used dechlorinated tap water, i am off to the lfs to get some carbon today, it is gradually clearing though i would say it is around 70% better already, i ran some more tests and they are the same as in my first post still. many thanks guys.

Hi,

You should really be using RO reverse Osmosis water for all you water needs in marine tanks.

I would highly recommend dropping a filter bag of rowaphos and activated carbon in the external aswell.

Oh, and where was the ocean rock from?
