Hi guys,

I am starting to think about a new tank to setup which will contain only corals and couple of none-shrimp eaters (fish).
I would appreciate your advices and help me with it.

I am thinking to get a 75-90gal corner tank, my big questions is I want to move skimmer and other equipment to sump, but I never used sump before.
I want to install tank in one room, and move sump to another one, the distance between them will be apx 3.5-4 meters, would this work that far?

When I am buying a tank should I ask them to prepare it for the overflow box?

Also is there any good articles how to make sump myself, how big it should be?

Below is a lits of the things I am planning to buy, please let me know what do u think about my choice

Overflow box

I am really not sure how exactly sump and overflow works what kind of the GPH I have to look for. Also am I going to need a pump too in the sump?

Calcium reactor to get some SPS corals, I am thinking about this one

Protein skimmer

Phosban rector

Wave Maker

I dont want to install any canister filter, its not required with the sump right?

This is a small list of the first things I want to get for this tank. Please advices me on this, also I am worried about the distance between sump and tank.
Also how can I Make sump setup safe so its not gonna destroy with water my floor.

The stock I want to get are:

Powder blue tang or hippo tang, would be great if I can keep both of them?
Yellow tang or purple tang, can I keep both of them or maybe one pair of them?
I also wanted to get one Red Flame Angel but I heard they nip corals.

As far as I read all the fish above I can feed only none- shrimp based food is that right?
Maybe u can suggest some other fish I can get.

Thank you very much for all your help.

Check out this site. It has very good information on the making of sumps, overflow boxes, flow rates, etc, etc. Click Here

As for the sump being that distance away, aside from the mass of pipework, you'd also need a pretty powerful pump to push the water that distance and push it up to the tank too. Is there no way you can install the sump in a cabinet directly below the tank?

Yes I can install it below the tank but the idea was to move it to another room I have, make a couple of holes in the wall and connect them with the pipes.
In this case I can make water changes from that room taking the water from the sump and replacing it with a new one. Also all filters skimmers and reactors can be also in that room, connected to the sump not to the main tank.

Its still possible to have the sump underneath the tank and simply have in sump skimmers and reactors. I would have thought that all of the equipment you want to purchase would easily fit beneath a 90G tank and making holes in walls and running that much pipe work, essentially just to perform a water change just seems overkill to be honest. If you were having one of those huge protein skimmers that stand 4'-5' tall and 3 or 4 reactors, a huge sump with a DSB, refugium with pendant halides etc, I could understand it but, in this case it kind of just seems a bit pointless. Not only that, if you decide to up and move home, then you will have to repair all the walls that were drilled lol.

As for buying the tank, its a far better option to have it drilled and bulkheads connected to it, rather than relying on overflow boxes. The reason being is that overflow boxes are not fail safe. They can lose syphon if too much air gets inside. If this happens, your display tank will overflow, pumping the vast majority of your sumps content onto your living room floor and possibly rupturing the seals on your display tank too, if it goes above the recommended fill level.

Flow through the sump should be 3-5 times the tank volume, so for your setup, look for around 450GPH. If you do decide to go to for a sump in another room, the pump you want will need to be able to push significantly more than this, since it need to move the water 4 meters along and 1 to 1.5m up. You would have to look on manufacturers websites for the data on the pumps, but I'd guess you'd be looking for one that's 1000GPH+. Just be sure that the pipework from the sump is capable of handling 450GPH. It might also be prudent to have twin drainage pipes to the sump. This way, should one somehow become blocked, your tank won't overflow.

Other fish you might consider : Clownfish, Chromis, Gobies, Mandarin, Bangaii Cardinal. All should play nicely with one another.

Thank you very much for your help.

About the fish, the list I have decided to go with is made specifically to keep only herbivore fish (veterinarians)
This is one of my requirements. Can u please suggest who I can go with .

If you went with a 90 gallon,

yellow tangs eat algaes and so do dwarf angels

So basically if I get only yellow tangs and dwarf angels I can only feed them seaweed?

Also how bad are the dwarf angels, I mean to nip and destroy corals?

Also I understand thet blue and hippo tangs are not herbivore fish?

Thank you very much for your help.
