Fish Fanatic
I am planning a major redesign of my tank for this upcoming weekend, and I wanted to see what those w/ way more experience than I in planted tanks think. My tank is not that big and is a half moon shape, 10 US gal, only 17.25" x 11" x 17" (w x d x h), so I have a lot of room to grow up, but not a lot of room front to back. So space can be tricky. I do not add supplemental CO2, and my light is a 12w (2x 6w bulbs) white T-5's at 10,000K each. Water quality is good, pH 7, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 20, Ammonia 0, Hardness 75 gH.
Right now the plan is to incorporate some of the elements that I already have in the current tank into the new design, they are:
1x Java Moss covered 1/2 Coconut Cave (approx. 5" x 4" (w x d))
3x Anubias Nana I attached to 2x driftwood - both driftwood pieces also act as shelter for the platties
- 1 driftwood approx. 8" x 1.5" x 8" (w x d x h), I keep 3" of length covered under the substrate so only really 5" w
- 1 driftwood approx. 5.5" x 2.5" x 3" (w x d x h)
3x Water Wisteria clumps
My plan is to add some taller, bushier plants for the platties and their fry to hide in, plus add some depth to the tank and then put in a carpet plant to fill in the blank spaces, not sure I want or have room for open plains areas. I plan on using either Seachem Flourite Black Sand or Red Gravel for the substrate, whichever looks better w/ the plants, haven't decided yet.
Right now I plan on adding the following plants:
12x Sagittaria subulata "Dwarf Subulata" for the carpet
2x Ceratophyllum demersum "Hornwort"
Maybe a couple Crypts and maybe some Jungle Vail if there is room or as a substitute for another plant.
Here is the layout that I worked up on Excel (not the best program to build one on, but I am comfortable w/ it)
Please let me know if I have my proportions are off on plant growth/width, or if some plants do not belong, or better/easier plants exist, or I am blocking light to plants that need more than others, anything helpful or useful is most appreciated. Thanks!
F = Filter; W = Wisteria; A = Anubias; S = Sagittaria Subulata; H = Hornwort
2x2 squares = approx 1 square inch
