hi all.i am a brand new guy and totally new to tropicals.my first of countless questions to come.i have well water at my house which is very high in iron.what would be my procedure to find out if i can use this water?sometime when washing clothes we will get rust stains.we have a water conditioner that i put salt in.does this have any effect on usability?i have all the equiptment but i want to get it right the first time so i can get on with the cycling.{a term i had never heard of before i found your site today, great site.}thanks for your help.

Use a water conditioner that detoxifies metals. That should take care of the iron problem. I'm not sure as to if the water softening salts will have an impact however.

Almost forgot :hi:

I don't think its desirable to use the water from typical home water softeners that add salts. Member OM47 is great with this stuff, does it himself and knows about it. He'll probably be on in the morning and see your thread as he's a regular in our beginner section. One way or another, there'll be a solution I'm sure.

Meanwhile its great that you're reading the articles in the Beginners Resource Center and I always recommend reading and participating in other's threads too as it helps you see the various problems of tank startup from different angles.

Welcome to TFF!

~~waterdrop~~ :)

if you are getting rust stains when you have a conditionner you have more problems. your conditionner isn't going enough. and some softeners dont' add salt to the water. i have the same problem as you and my fish are doing fine. both before and after i had a proper conditionner installed.
