I know, I know, I should have more sense .......but, I just went to get fish food and ended up getting some more plants and 2 new fishies. One is a red finned shark and the other another oddball - anablep anablep (4 eyes) I always thought that they were brackish fish, but my lfs assured me that there are two types - freshwater and brackish. Anyway, I was persuaded. The shark seems fine, looking around his new surroundings and staking out his territory. The 4 eyes keeps mainly to the top of the tank, and unless I open the tank, I can't see him :( I feel a bit stupid buying a fish that I can't see :*) But he sure is odd - a long slim body with eyes that are out of the water most of the time. Looks like he's got pop eye. Occaisonally, he dives down if he thinks there's something to eat there. At feeding time, he ate whatever floated and dived for bloodworms Hope he gets acclimatised and lives a long and healthy life with his new found friends.

Also got some new plants, including a ball of green "fur" I don't know what it is, but it's completely round and looks like green short fur. Can's see any roots, but it grows. Anyone know what it's called.

Hi gad!
Nice to see your post. Personally depending what other fishes you have in your tank, the red tailed shark although attractive will prove to be quite an aggressor. They need to be in a shoul otherwise they tend to bully smaller fish. Your oddball sounds quite a character. The ball of fur-Is it by any chance java moss. I know who will be able to tell you. Rose.

He's not a red tail - he's a red fin - they're not quite as nasty - about half way between a bala and a red tail :)

I think the plant is some kind of java moss - it just grows in a ball and not on things - if you know what I mean :S

Hey gad, I know the plant u mean, but carnt think of the name, it does look pretty similar to java moss (if it isnt that of corse  ) I'll see if I can find it again

ok, is it this :

If it is, its called cladophora aegagropila

Yep, that's it. In the meantime my bigger fish, especially my plec, seem to think it's a football to play with :) It's moved to the other side of the tank since yesterday - and it hasn't got feet

My lfs has them - £2.95 a ball. It's one of the plants that get sold as soon as he gets them in. I got mine out of one of his display tanks (he's very good to me - I'm a great customer and spend too much money and time there  )

I was guessing that it is found in the UK, I have never seen it here and we all know you folks in the UK get all the cool stuff.....lol

I thort it was the other way around! :p

When it comes to plants and tanks you got us beat by a mile. There is one site that has so many plants from the UK that I was going to see if I would be able to import them.

And all I need to say Juewl Tanks.......I love them things.....hehehehee

Les

yeah the juwel tanks are top quality....but with a price tag to match!

there's 2 online plant stores I use (lfs's have like 5 diff plants thats all :S ) one is java and the other is greenline, let me know if ya want the url and i'll find em for ya :)

I appreciate that Stix but I guess I better find out if I can even get them in the US without problems, I know that they dont allow certain plants but I am uncertain if that pertains to aquatic plants too

Les

I'll have a quick search for US plant sites as i've never looked b4, not sure if i'll find any or not but i'll let ya know

I've seen cladophora aegagropila at the LFS. They are pretty cool. They have one in their display tank as well. I would like to see a lot of them put side to side, kinda like a mossy floor. Les, it's not nessecarily the fact that we live in the US, its that not everyone in the US that likes fish, likes plants. You need to find a place that specializes in plants and community fish. In Houston, there is only one, there is about to be two, the one I'm going to help set up. The thing is, all the knowlegable people at the old one, are going to the new one. :grr: So, hopefully in a short time, there will only be one again, the one we start. :grr:

I know that sounds harsh, but the owner of the other place insists that they carry parrots and some of the larger cichlids. Doesn't sound too bad (except the parrots) but that's tank space, a lot of tank space, that could be used on cooler fish, and plants.

Now, I love cichlids, but the only ones they carry can be found at any fish shop in Houston, so I don't mind them not wanting to carry them.
