Hi all

Just as a rule of thumb, how long do you think i should leave it before i should get concerned about new additions to my tank not feeding?

depends completely on the fish, if i had anyone not feeding after a day or two i'd be worried though.

is this just a hypothetic question or do you have a new addition who'se not eating? give us some details and we can try and set your mind at ease or make some suggestions.

hi miss wiggle

yep... i have 3 spotted pike characins, i have managed to get 2 of then to take some lance fish that they were being fed on at my lfs, the trouble i`m finding is that they don`t seem to connect the lifting of the tank lid with feeding time and as all the other occupants of the tank surge to the surface for food they head in the other direction!
i think maybe the root of the prob is they were in a tank of there own in the shop and really never had any competition for food, were as now its hustle and bustle at feed time and of couse as you can imagine how frustrating it is, as no food manages to hit the lower regions of the tank were these guys head for!!

yeah new competition for food can be tricky. try feeding twice, feed some floating food at one end of the tank, then when all the other fish are truly engrossed in this drop some lance fish in the other end of the tank and hope they get it.

or you could try hand feeding, you'd need to get them used to your hands in the tank near them. but if you feed everyone else then put in your hand holding the lance fish near to them they may learn to come and take some from you. or even if you just place some on the substrate near to they're favourite haunt they may get it there.

they won't notice whos feeding them for a while... my angles were the exact same way when I got them, they'd come up and get the food when they saw it... but now the second they see me the rush towards the top and think it's feeding time

yeah its always ood to see your fish eating at the store i always ask to see that then once i get them i tend to find they will take about 3-4 days before they start feeing proerly and about 1-2 weeks before they know what my hand lifting the lid means :p tho thats just my tank mates :D

 all my fish were the same way :D except my arowana, he knew I'm the hand who feeds him and always rushed for his carnivore sticks

are these fish Boulengerella maculata?

Indeed, they are Fella; though normally pike charchin refers to Ctenolucius hujeta I thought?

Pike characin is one of those vague common names that encompasses just about anything that is elongated with scales, I was just trying to ID the species to see if it could help the OP.
