Hi

Well my Rio 125 tank has been running now for over 6 weeks and although the Nitrate is still a little high at times the other readings are fine.

I have now the following in my tank

6 x Neon Tetra's
2 x Red Tailed Guppies
2 x Supra Tetra
1 x Albino Pleco
1 x M & 1 x Female Dwarf Gourami
2 x Cichlids (Not sure of exact name
2 x African Mono's

I purchased the Mono's from a dealer at the weekend and talking to someone today was surprised to hear that I had them in the tank. He was saying that they are Brackish fish and shouldn't be kept in a freshwater Tropical tank. Can anyone confirm whether this is correct or not please ?

Also just noticed what looks like a white bit appearing at the back of one of the Mono's near the tail. He has become quite lifeless also. Before they were both darting all around the tank but only one appears to be doing this now. Is it due to the water maybe or is it another case of an infection ?

Thanks alot

Kevin

I can confirm they are defiantely Brackish, and into adult hood, enter fully marine conditions in the wild.

They can however, live in Freshwater as babies.

Sounds like he might have the start of white spot (ich) due to stress, this parasite attaches to the fish, and lives off it, you must start treating it straight away, if it is (ich) Please read up about it too, (i have done so) and it is very accurate, tells you about the life cycle of the ich etc, and when it will die....

Good Luck

its probably an infection due to the fact that they are stressed from not living in a good environment from them. can you transfer them to a hospital tank with some salt in it and see if your LFS will take them back?

African monos (Monodactylus sebae) wont survive long without the addition of marine salt, they are also quite sensative to being moved so the tank should be kept in a darkened tank for a day or two when they are first intorduced to allow them to settle in, stress is a major killer of these fish.
