New Filter

Okay, I recently got Estes Marine Sand, (now I've heard its not the best sand out there), but I put it in my 10 gallon tank that doesn't have fish yet. I have a Whisper 50 filter, that I haven't put on the tank yet, because I heard Whisper Filters can get the impellers clogged with the sand or something like that. So, is there anything I can do to the Whisper 50 filter to stop it from getting messed up by the sand. If not, what type of filter and what brand would you recommend, I really don't know much about filters.

Oldest trick in the book to keep unwanted little things out of the filter is to put pantiehose over the filter intake to act as a strainer! Try that and see if it works for ya.
