so, not admitting that the builtin filter in my juwel tank is not good enough
but lets imagine i had some spare cash to spend on my fishes welfare, what would you more experienced types recommend?

would a more powerful powerhead help? currently using the 301k that came with it (600lph for a 190l tank) would a larger one fit this tank?

would another filter unit be an idea? if so suggestions? and run 2 side by side or just the new one - bearing in mind i dont really want to upset the fish by removing the current filter housing...

meaning if i did get a second filter unit, and the original is staying put, should i use it too simply because it will be staying in the tank

TIA

A good external filter is a good addition to any tank, eheims are the best IMO. Run both filters side by side using a variety of medias, ie the standard juwel media in the internal and some peat and chemical absorbing media like phoszorb and nitrazorb in the external for optimum water quality.

thanks for that, was an ehiem i had seen, not cheap though are they?
assume it could sit in the back of the cabinet out of sight, do they come with plenty of pipe - guess i'd also have to cut my hood to accomodate the pipes?

They do come with pipes and fittings, but most come with either very litlle or very basic filter media, so check if you need to buy the good stuff when you buy the filter. I agree with CFC, Eheims are usually soild built but vcheck if it has a priming facility as some filters can be a pain to start/restart without them if you havent used one before. I have an Eheim Proffesionel on my juwel vision 180 as the juwel filter is stuck in one corner. Be careful you dont blow your fish away either! Most south americans like slow moving water, except some catfish, while some asian stream fish appreciate strong currents. Build your fishes preference into your plans as well.

Should point out I use a spray bar for my external and you may need to cut the lid on the Trigon to get it to fit....
