I am fed up with having a big internal filter in my 100L tank so I am looking for an external canister filter but don't want to spend a fortune on it. I did look at getting one second hand but decided that I don't want to use old filter media so I may as well look at getting a new one instead.

After looking around at different options and price points I think I have cancelled it down to the two following filters:

http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquarium-1/aquarium-filters/external-filters/aquarium-external-filter-1400-l-h.html

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0055F7F9O/ref=s9_simh_se_p199_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=auto-no-results-center-1&pf_rd_r=C4F8B5809CA7422AA68A&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_p=240112507&pf_rd_i=terratac

Has anyone had any experience with the above filter and would you recommend them? I have never used an external filter before so Im not really sure what to look at apart from the Litres Per Hour.

It is a 100L tank with a decent stock level (not too high), It is also a planted tank with 2x24W T5 bulbs.

Thanks in advance!

APS have a bit of a bad rep when it comes to reliability of the seals, but quite a good rep when it comes to customer service.

I use an Aquamanta EX200, from MAs, never had any problem with it at all. I have a 100l tank.

I am using the large APS one on my new aquarium - see thread here: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/420962-my-aquarium-housingcabinet-project/

Due to illness not been able to get it going yet but it seems nicely enough made and is a lot of filter for the money - a couple of things to note:

only a tiny amount of filter media is supplied - you can get 2 litres of the eheim stuff here for 8 quid which seems reasonable, http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000A216BK

the taps are not true double taps like the expensive eheim ones - only the pipes are sealed and the filter left open so if moving outside to clean you would have to be careful to avoid spillages.

Thanks for the replies.
After your comment of the seals having s bad rep on the APS filters I am going to pop to maidenhead to take a look at the aquamanta units. Tempted to go for a Ex300 just in case i decide to get a bigger tank in the future, do they have an adjustable flow like my internal does, don't want to overspec it and blow my fish around.

problem is Fishkeeping on a budget, gets you budget equipment.
this has been, and always will be, a FACT.

I've had two filters running for 5 years, the only thing that has needed changed is filter pads.
no leaks, no broken parts, no breakdowns.
I have no idea how good the makers customers services are, because i have never needed them.

I wont name the maker, becuase it could only be one!

APS external for the price. They're good budget filters and you can't go wrong for the price of them.
Depends on how much you've got to spend.
If you have the money go for the better ones but for an extra £10, you could get the APS 2000. Well worth it and the tank is nice and thoroughly filtered.

Subscribe to a well-known monthly fishkeeping magazine....the free gift for taking up a subscription is (or very recently was) a free external filter, probably able to cope with 150 odd litres. I had one last year when needing to upgrade from an internal, I was lucky enough to get the free offer and it was a fantastic bit of kit

Terry.
