Just got an eheim but need to buy filter media for it. I just wanted to know what the most effective set of media is. At the mo i have a juwel which comprises of 2 coarse layers , 2 fine layers, a nitrate filter layer and the filter wool. What eheim stuff takes out small particles of dirt?

What eheim model do you have ? Internal or external?
The black carbon pad would remove the fine particles. But I've never used it and my water's crystal clear. Many people just use the carbon pad to remove medication (after treatment).

Have the 2228 professional. It has a much larger capacity than the juewl standard H. I bought the ehisubstrat (i think its called) which cost 18 quid for 2 litres!!! and a set of fine pads and a coarse pad. What i did to fill the first 2 layers was to place my existing media in there which is fully mature - needed a little butchering but it was a neat fit.
This should speed up the maturing of the new media. But i still dont know what the best filter setup is that will give me crystal clear water - even after buying an eheim!

I layer mine like this (starting from the bottom):

Ehfi Mech (looks like noodles)
Course blue sponge
Ehfi substrat
Ehfi Synth (filter floss)
Fine filter pad

My water is crystal clear.

Your two fine layers and the filter wool should take care of your fine filtration. Should be fine the way you have it.
