Hi there, I recently picked up a pea puffer from one of my local fish retailers. He's about 1.5cm long. He's in a 5g planted tank, only other tank mates are two amano shrimp? i read they are not recommended with Dp's because of their aggressiveness. But right now my problem is i am seeing some signs of what could be ich. I have taken a couple pictures to both get an opinion and show off my new addition.

Tank Parameters: 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, 0ppm nitrate, 77degC (raising the temp to 80 slowly)

Hope someone can tell if it is ich, i'm prepared to start treatment with NOX-ich, the active ingredients are: Sodium chloride and Malachite green at a 1.0% concentration.

This is the shot you can see the spots

Honestly, I'd give the old "elevated temperature and added salt" approach a try before messing around with medicines. Most puffers can tolerate low end brackish for long enough to kill off an ich infection. Be sure to add aeration to offset the oxygen depletion due to the higher temperature.

You'll have to ask someone else if non-iodized table salt is good enough for this purpose or if you'll have to get some marine mix.

I do have some salt to add, i will give that a try. Thanks for the input. And yes i have spare air stone going in tonight when i find an extention cord for it as rigt now my power-bar is full.

From your photos I can't see any ich, but if you see there is, just bump the heat/airation up and add a little salt keep it like this for a couple of weeks.
As for the amano shrimps, it's always a little hit/miss with DP's, but I keep 5 Amanos with my DPs and never had any problems the same with Ottos.

I have to agree that from your pics I can't see any white spots either!

Some more plants would be good or some more stony caves for it to explore, but the tank does look nice already. Your puffer should be very happy in there :D

Little update on the DP he's doing great and has been eating blood worms right out of my fingers, Still haven't had time to shop for new plants im thinking some moss balls to make that cave you suggested.

Going to try get some pics of him chowing down.

I love the way he follows everything i put into the tank. I knew they were interactive fish but soon i think ill have him fetching me my paper.

Glad he is doing well, they are such special little fish, I love mine too.

Cheers, Karl

Glad to hear your little puff's doing well. Feeding these little guys is so much fun. One of my males thinks that he's a dolphin, always pushing his nose out of water to get to my pipette

I'm really glad too thanks for the help with everything and the suggestions. I was pretty worried for a but as i really wanted to trust this new lfs i used to buy him. There selection is huge and they might be the place that helps me branch over into some marine tank in the future.

Thanks again and ill be sure to post some more pics once i get the new decor

That tank looks awesome :hyper:

I really like the dark looking substrate and the tree sticking right out the floor, giving me plenty of ideas for my own Dwarf Puffer tank.
