Finally got to buying and building my new 38 gallon tank. It's supposed to be for my black piranha but maybe things will change. Just thought I'd post how I built the stand and top. It's also on my website. Materials came out to about $20 CAD.

Here is the bottom half of the stand. I used 6 Inch lag bolts to keep it together

This is a close up of how I countersank the bolts so they wouldn't stick out. I pre-drilled a hole, then used a 5/8" drill bit to a depth of about 1/8", just enough to make the bolt flush with the wood.

This is the unstained finished stand. I used double leg supports just to avoid any swinging of the tank.

Here is the sketch of the build plan. This time I decided to put my plan on paper. Feel free to use if you can make sense of it. ;)

This is the stand, stained and sealed against water with polyurethane.

And this is the canopy/crate. I didn't feel like building a fancy hinged canopy for this tank.

And here is the final product with the tank filled and filtration going. It has an emperor 400 and a powerhead quickfilter. There's going to be a flourescent light on top, but I didn't wire it yet :/
It took me total about 3 hours including the staining and sealing. It's not the most attractive, but it does the job, and that's why it's in the basement

Very cool! Looks good to me! I'd like to try building and wiring a hood for my 29 gallon, but I don't have the tools I need. I suppose I could go to my parents' for a weekend and do it there.....

Anyway, good job!

hey guys..i stole konrad's idea and tried to make a stand for my 24x12 tank using his pictures as model. As an amateur in this kind of thing, I did have some difficulties. Anyway, the pictures clearly shows the flaws of the stand that I made (circled). Il try to sand those parts.. -_- It's not as good as his but it still does the work, hopefully...

thanks to konrad for posting and sharing his ideas..
You rock!
:p

haha thanks kent and everyone. If the tank were to go anywhere else but the basement, I would have filled the front hole with cabinet doors or vertical 2x4's. Glad my pics came to good use. :D
