Hi,

I've just bought 3 Peru gold line cories and when I got home I noticed that one has what looks like a reb blob of tissue sticking out of it's anus. Is this something I should worry about in terms of it being infectious or a parasite?

Here's some pics:

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Can you issolae them fast, take a closer look can you see any worms there, they are very contagious and can effect alot of other fish in the tank, what the other corys like can you see anly long red worm danging from the anus.

Well it's done a poo  and it doesn't seem to be worms. It's anus is still very red though. What's got me worried is that this one is very docile and inactive compared to the other 2.

The other 2 seem to be unaffected.

If the anus is red and inflamed sad to say it internal parasites and they are hard to cure, you can get a med from a vet called levimsole, but sometimes that to late as the damage to the inside of the fish has already been done.
I would get the fish out of the tank, even issolate it in a icecream or tupperware box at the top of the tank.
Will get you some info to read.

Thanks very much for your help Wilder.

It does certainly sound a lot like internal parasites, but its hard to say as this does not look like a classic case to me of internal parasites, what color was the poop which was passed? Have you fed the cory or other fish in the tank any foods which contained red coloring in them? On the other hand, the anus shouldn't remain red after the poop has been passed.
Its also posible its a bacterial infection, posibly a secondary infection to something already ailing the fish.

My advise would be to go to down your vet and pick up a med called Levamisole, its technically a cattle wormer but it also works wonders on fish infected with internal parasites and is harmless for the vast majority of fish.
To be on the safe side though, after you have finished medicating the cory with Levamisole (particually if there is no improvement or change in the corys condition), i would pick up some Pimafix (which treats external and internal bacterial infections as well as fungal ones).
For info on treating fish with Levamisole, check out this thread :) ;

I'm honestly undecided on wether this is internal parasites or a bacterial infection, but i am absolutely positive it is one of these two.

Hi Andrew Tan :)

Please don't do anything drastic to your tank. Too often people treat their fish for exotic problems before they are properly identified. Anti-parasite medicines are very dangerous to use. If you are in doubt about the fish's health, it would be better just to bring it back to the store for an exchange.

Unlike most fish, who swim with their private parts down, corys sometimes show everything even when they are having bowel movements. Since they pass little black (sort of round) turds, sometimes it will attract your attention while it is happening. I know it scared me a number of times. :hyper: I never looked at them closely enough to see what color their parts are  though. Why not just wait an see if the red fades once the fish is back to normal and you know what kind of diet it is eating?

That being said, congratulations on getting some very beautiful and much sought after corys. You were very lucky to have found them!
