Afternoon People! Ive not posted in this section before, but hope i can get some help. :)

I posted this on on a thread about my new tank earlier in Freshwater, but doubt it will get the same reception as here!

For future, the tank is 4 feet long, 2 feet tall, and 18 inches front to back. I make it 250ltrs or 50gl, or what ever it is now minus the displacement of substrate, a few plants and bits of bogwood, and a 20kg "rock". Probably around 220ltrs.

The nice couple that i bought the above tank from offered me enough media from the three externals they have running to do my new one, so i went round to pick it up from them yesterday. (They're only just across town :))

While i was there i was also lucky enough to get some free Cherry shrimp. She picked me out a few females and a male in the hope they would breed and i would get more in time. Having looked at them pretty closely after i put them in, it appears i have 3 females and 2 male. The larger of the three females (I appear to have fully adult female, one slightly younger, and one very young, and an adult and juvenile male). I read a large amount of info on their life-cycle and care when i got home last night, as i've never kept shrimp. "Apparently" you cant go wrong....

The "older" of the three appears (based on my reading above) to be carrying a large amount of early stage eggs, very small and yellowish.

The "middle" of the three also appears to be carrying, but only several and much larger eggs of a orange colour. I cant see any "eyes" in them, but have read not all of them show this.

The youngest female and 2 males there isnt much to say about, they're just shrimp after all!

I noticed this morning that the "middle" one appears to have "dropped" a few eggs, no idea where they are, and the "larger" one had so many i couldn't possibly tell if she too had dropped some.

They're also now in permanent hiding. It might be worth mentioning that the tank has no other inhabitants, and there wont be until next weekend when i get some FISH in this one finally! :)

The tank they came from was very heavily planted, so much so that it was quite hard to pick some out (beautiful tank however, with a full CO2 setup)

Should i be worried? Water was tested last night before they wet in and this morning, all zero's with 20-40ppm nitrate.

I have a 2ft upstairs i could get running an put them in if they would be better off? Im not sure if they are crapping themselves having all this water to themselves!

Ben :)

Oh good! I have slipped a mirror up the back of the tank, and have found them spread out under a piece of bogwood eating the moss from the underside. There's plenty on top where i can watch them, but they're not interested, they obviously dont like being watched!

Thanks!

Ben

The offspring well be rather small and almost transparent, making them hard to see. I have some for about 6 months now and they are only starting to come out during the day. I guess it took them some time to get used to having fish around, because they came from a shrimp only tank.

These guys came from a tank with around 15 or so fish, but as aoove, it was quite heavily planted, so there was plenty of hiding space!

Ill see how they get on! :)

My tank with the shrimp has a lot of plants as well thigh might be another reason why I didn’t see them during the day.

something to think about.

if you have mature media, but no fish, the bacteria will die off untill there is a source of ammonia. so you might want to think about doing something with that media they gave u untill you get fish.... i dont think 5 shrimp will be enough to keep it going.....

Correct, their bioload is too small to keep it all alive.

Cheers for the help guys!

I thought about the above when i was putting them in, as i was supposed to get fish the same time. Unfortunately the LFS didnt come through on their promises of a shipment of Sterbai, and so i had to take the external off the 4 footer and set the 2 ft back up for a cycle to keep them fed. Its pumping round like a washing machine (1500lph filter on a 72 ltr tank lol ) but since there are no inhabitants, i figured i should be ok till this weekend yar? I dosed the tank for the last time this morning, as i "hope" to pick up fish tomorrow. If i dont, ill be dosing it again!

Cheers again guys :)

EDIT - Should probably add (before the "er" posters come! ;)) that there is still a filter in the main tank. Its the Fluval U2 that runs in the 4footer in case its needed in the hospital tank (the above tank thats now keeping my filter alive). While i only have the U2, which is only rated to about 105 ltrs (4ft is 339) in there for the shrimp, im doing tests and water changes every two days (because im parnoid lol)

:)
