I got my new pet today!! beautiful green and yellow budgie who I estimate to be about 3 months old. I was going to wait until after Id been on holiday but this little budgie in the shop where I work appeared in isolation sometime between this week and last. there didnt seem to be anything wrong with it except that its wings had been clipped, which I figured would help me to train it, rather than being a hindrance. however, when its feathers moult out, i'll probably not cut them as im not comfortable with it.

Im not sure if its a boy or a girl because the cere is pink with a blueish tinge so it leads me to think it is a boy. Its sitting behind me chirruping away and its very settled compared to my sisters budgie. it doesnt react as much if you move about the cage and it seems to like people talking to it. I cant come up with a name.

I saw "Pluto" on telly and thought it was a cute name and if it was a girl it might have been "jasmine" but im all out of ideas!!! any suggestions welcome. Wsh me luck with training him/her!! would tomorrow be too soon??

Hi plecoperson :)

Congratulations on getting a new budgie! He sounds lovely. Do you have any pictures to share with us yet?

How is he doing, BTW?

Training isnt going so well though. she doesnt like coming out of her cage and I havent found a food she really likes yet to use as a treat. still working on it though!! I really want to paint her but she has so many complicated patterns its scary!!!

Budgies make me laugh.....they are such cute little characters....

have you named her yet? I thought of Kylie....after Kylie Minogue....remember she was called "the singing budgie".....unless you don't want a bird named after her.... -_-

Sweet little thing she is (the bird)

We decided on Jazz because she is always strutting about and trying to boss everyone about - it just seems to fit. we tried lots of names to see which one she responded best to. She has a spot of scaly leg at the moment which Im trying to treat and getting gnawed in the process!

awww she looks really cute, the best thing that works on scaly face is vaseline! we tried the stuff from the pet shops and that didn't work on one of our budgies and we ended up taking her to the vets as it was getting her down we were given antibiotics and that didn't work! Finally met a budgie breeder and he said vaseline works so we tried that and it did, bit messy though!! :D

Fantastic!! Ill try that if this stuff from the pet shop desnt work. she doesnt have it too bad at the moment. Vaseline seems to be the magic cure all!

her bum reminds me of pickle
what a sweety

they are little charactors
my little one thinks that everyone is "his" and will crawl all over you even climbing down your forhead as you scream because he wants kisses, only from a really odd angle -_-

You can tell the gender by the colour of the bird's cere (the bumpy thing above it's beak). In males it's a light to dark blue, in females it's brown.

I think the colour will become more distinguishable in a few months, but so far it looks more like a boy to me (which is good too, boy can be taught to speak a few words easier than females).

actually i dont think that is entirely true. i'm pretty sure it is as easy to teach a female to talk as a male.

anyway very cute budgie you have there! if you are still having trouble trying to get her to come out of her cage, try using lettuce, as the smell of the water might attract her. it worked with mine. just make sure she doesnt eat too much of it as lettuce isnt particularly good for budgies.
