Hi,

I have only ever kept female bettas but yesterday i bought my first male betta. He is called midnight and as soon as my son shows me how to post pics, i'll put some on. My hubby, who has never really understood my fasination with fish, was so impressed with him that he has suggested we get another one. He is in a 6 gallon tank and loves to sit on the filter and chill. Can't wait for him to start bubble nesting. Not sure whether to buy a new tank for 2nd male or divide this one?

While I was out I also bought a little female HM and she is now with my other females. They are all in fact sisters, just bought at different times so they get along great.

The 4 females are in a new 8 1/2 gallon tank, which has lots of hiding places but I was wondering about putting some ottos with them or maybe even a rainbow or gourami. I have read all the pinned topics but everyone has such different opinions. Is it a case of buying the fish, trying it out and if it works great, if not have a back up plan?

I do have a spare tank, filters ect so if the meeting didn't go well the fish could be separated.

I personally would divide the 6 gallon tank for another male. You can never have too many bettas and my guys are perfectly happy in 3 gallons of water.

Gouramis and bettas should not be mixed, as a general rule. I asked about it on here recently because I wanted to try it (some people have had success) but decided against it because I didn't want to risk it. Rainbowfish are schooling fish and should be in groups of 6 or more. You could probably put some otos in there, or white cloud mountain minnows, or a trio of pygmy cories.

Can't wait to see photos. :)
