Have you checked the bottom of your shoe?
I went to Wal-mart to get my betta boy. He's a veiltail that has absolutely no fin rot, no chronic illnesses, nothing. :p He has long fins that are kinda curled at the bottom (cause of poor cup water) and from his pectoral fins to his mouth is all a light fleshy white color with brown speckles. The rest of his body is a nice purply color that either looks pink, lavendar, violet or dark purple, depending on where the light hits his scales.

He is in a large (and heavy! :grr: ) goldfish bowl with a large leafy silk plant, a bushy silk plant and a flowery silk plant. The substrate is are large, black river rocks from a decorating store. He also has a mini castle in there.

One concern is his gill flaps, they are a deep red? Not having a light-colored betta before, are they supposed to be such a dark red? Do bettas have nostrils as mine seems to have two little holes above his mouth that have brown edges that match his speckles. :) He doesn't seem very active, but I'm sure he is just settling in.

Any name suggestions?

Ooh, congrats! he sounds gorgeous! Can't wait for pic! What about Fleck? (for the brown freckles).. it'll be easier to think of names for him when we see pics ;) :D

The gill flaps being bright red could just be normal gill bars, and probably are in fact just that. If they look inflamed, then that's bad, but, if they otherwise look normal, then it's probably just coloration.

Several of my lighter-colored Bettas have the same nostril-like markings that you describe. I don't know if they are nostrils or not (I've never heard of a fish having a nostril...), but they sure look like it.

I just scared Hunter to death trying to check for "nostrils." Yep, he's got 'em too. He also has reddish gills. He's had them since the day I got him so I am sure they are natural coloring. Booker also has them, but they are not so noticeable since he is red anyway. I couldn't check his nostrils since he's at home.

Phew, I thought the nostrils could be some sort of injury. hehe, just fed the new boy some bloodworms. He still isn't eating. *sighs* Oh well..

I think I might name him Sundance..my little cousin told me to name him that..Hmm..
