I have a new two gallon tank that is the future home of a crown tailed Betta. The question I have for all the resident Betta experts is this. The tank came with an underground filter and small pump that forces air up through a tube and sends a spray of bubbles into the water.

I know that the underground is outdated but don't really think I need a filter for a two gallon tank with one fish...water changes would be easy enough. The question is the flow of bubbles, I have read on here that Bettas don't like that but I don't know what is worse, bubbles or no filter/airation at all?????

What do you think? If I knew how to post a picture to here I would but only seem to be able to post in the members pics area.

Thanks

I never use the ugf's that come with tanks, just chunk it to the side and forget about it. The bubbles aren't that betta friendly since they like still water as you said and they also disturb bubble nests. And under the bottom plate of the ugf it always gets nasty

Thanks, that's kinda what I thought but since I've never kept a betta or had a tank this small I wasn't sure.

One more question, how do you keep the tank warm enough. It is nice weather here in Houston and the windows are finally open at night. I have the tank set up and have a thermometer attached and this morning the reading was 68 degrees.

It has a little bitty light which I don't think would add much. Are there mini heaters for these 2 gallon tanks?

walmart sells a great little heater designed for small tanks, believe its junior brand or something like that. runs around $6 to $8, perfect for a 1 or 2 gal betta tank.

I have 6 bettas, 5 boys, 1 girl. I agree that the ugf is nothing but trouble, but all of my bettas, like to play in thier filters. Yes, it does mess up their bubble nests, but if you are not planning on breeding, then i would put some kind of air in there. I know that they breathe air from the top of the tank, but mine play in their moving water. You could use the pump that came with the ugf and get a little filter to put on the back, I am not sure what they are called, but they look like little boxes that go in the tank, to help you to keep its tank clean. It would still have to go through a cycle, but bettas are pretty hardy fish. Hope I have been some help. Some bettas, do not like their water moving, so you would have to see if your bettas likes movement of the water.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I will look for a mini heater and once I get a Betta I will let it decide whether the bubbles stay or go. B)
