Just got him today
I didn't notice that on one side he is missing the scale thingy(?)
that covers his gill.....it is exposed on one side, I can't believe I didn't see this at the shop.......well they were on the top rack and I was on my toes trying to see them....anyway,
will he grow it back?
do I need to medicate?
is it an injury or disease?

I have a pic posted HERE Please look.........

Any info is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

It's more than likely a genetic defect from to much inbreeding.

This in no way will prevent the fish from leading a normal life, but DO NOT use it for breeding purposes!!!! It will pass on theses defects to subsequent generations!!

I used to get a few fry with partial or missing gill plates, but it was usually only when I would tumble the eggs while hatching them out. Keep in mind these are mouthbrooding species!! If the eggs get tumbled to fast or there are to many in the tumbler they can get tossed about or damaged just enough to cause a defect.

Fish with this type of problem are ok for breeders because it was not a genetic defect.

I would really havwe to assume yours is tho due to angels being egglayers!!

If the fish was purchased for breeding purposes, take it back to the store and show them the problem. Chances are they will take it back, but will end up destrying the fish.
