Wonder if you can help. Saw this pic and wondered if it would be a suitable to add to my tank. I think its call a techincolour Krib

Any info would be good. Size and suitability with excisting fish see below

Thanks :D

Hi,

Wow that is a bright fish. Do you happen to know if it's natural or dyed? See this earlier post for more info on the practice of dying fish.

it's a cichlid and can be very aggressive. .... And i personaly would not put it in with your other fish it will see your tetras as lunch

Looks like a normal adult male krib in full breeding colouration. They are a dwarf species and peaceful as cichlids go so can be added to community tanks providing there is sufficient space for the krib to claim a small territory.

I'm glad you said that - I've seen them in shops I know don't stock dyed fish and they looked just like that. Pretty fish!

How big would they grow - Probably wait until I get another tank and base it around this beauty.

Do they school or would I just get one?? I take it they would like happliy with other medium size fish ?

Could they be kept with Tiger barbs- the other fish i've had my eye on but definatly wouldn't go in my tank

Kribensis only get to about 3 or 4 inches and are best kept in male female pairs, one pair per tank. They can be kept with small or medium sized and even large peaceful fish. They may become slightly aggresive when breeding and will defend a area of the tank from other fish. On the tiger barbs i wouldnt like to say, if the school was large enough and they were in a large enough tank then it could work but tiger barbs can be a real nusience in a community tank.

Thanks for that mo. I've book marked it for future reference.

Maybe a few year but now I have made a start on deciding what will be in it.

hi
we had 2 kribs m&f & they were just as colourful ........but we put them in with neons & danios(lfs bad advice) & couldnt understand why our neons & danios were vanishing & blamed our barbs. till i spotted the culprits at their murderous work one night - the kribs having a midnight snack hunting attacking & munching a poor neon!!!!!! ( i did try to stop them but it was too late)
sadly we took them back as we have no room for another tank & hope they got a more suitable home. they seemed to get on ok with our barbs though. but maybe that was cos they were too busy lining up their next meal...oooh danio or neon today????

I got a couple of kribs when I started out and they were (and stilll are) my favorites. :) The female got just as colorful as the male in that picture when they started breeding, the male was a little paler. It was so much fun watching them guard their little ones and take them out for "walks". ;)

They can be nasty though, and the same that happened to millym's neons happened to mine. If you want to keep kribs with other fish, get at least a 20 gal tank. A 20 gal for just a couple is a good idea too, since they will most likely breed and the fry need space to grow in. Just keep in mind that a lot of inbreeding has messed with their "babycare" abilities and it can be hard to find a couple that will be good parents. If you really want tiger barbs, get an even bigger one (tiger barbs want lots of space to swim in).

Oh, and be careful about what plants you get. My kribs ate most of what I had, except for an Echinodorus and Ceratopteris cornuta.

By the way, thanks for the link Moe, it's very informative. :)
