Hey everyone,

I just added a new addition to my tank yesturday. I bought this yellow beauty from the LFS in Westport. They guy told me he should eat seaweed and flakes. What is the proper diet for a yellow tang? I have done some research but they all seem to have different ideas as to what is good for him. Also, I tried to put some flakes into the tank but he doesn't see them. How do I get him to start eating from the surface of the tank?

Thanx everyone. Check out my picture.

I have been into the reef hoby now for 1 month and am loving it!!! :D

First off I would watch him like a hawk for white spot!. First signs get him out and treat him cos the early you treat the better the outcome. As for food, my tang prefers to take from the water column rather than the surface, I think they feel a little exposed hanging around the top. Try some nori on a clip for him and also some frozen foods like brine shrimp & mysis shrimp. Mine will eat flake but only cos hes a greedy monkey. Lots of variety is the key that way the get a good balanced nutrition. It may take a week or so for him to peoperly settle and eat whats offered.

Yeah, lots of food and lots of variety is the best Tang diet. Dried Nori, veggie flakes, regular flakes, pellets, brine, mysis, etc. They're usually voracious and will eat just about anything. Including your hair algae ;)
