So I'm getting a new tank thats 150cm x 60cm x 80cm, but I'm not sure what to do with it... I'd like something big like an Arowana or Black Ghost Knifefish. What would you guys put in a tank with these dimensions? :S

Also, if anyone has any photos of well furnished 200+ gallon tanks I will lift my hat to you :good:

Although it has high volume it's only 5 foot long. Any fish over a foot shouldn't really be kept in there. I would use that as your guide.

Agree with assaye, although the tank holds alot of water and has a large surface area it still only has 5 ft in length for swimming space so that would rule out a BGKF or arowana.

How about oscars?

What filtration is going to on the tank?

Does that rule apply if the fish isn't a very active swimmer, like a BGK?

BGKF can reach 24", although it is rare. Generally they are over 12" as adults. They may be fairly sedate swimmers (I know some very large, playful BGKF) but even in a large fish tank they are getting considerably less space than in the wild. We shouldn't be trying to find ways of squeezing large fish into small tanks, period.

Fair deuce, I will reluctantly rule out BGK... I'm not so keen on oscars but thanks for suggesting something. Will a Bichir work?

Btw, I'll be using a Fluval FX5 if thats sufficient -_-

Would think 2 x FX5 would be more appropriate. You would need a very lightly stocked tank to get away with one.

As for stock, if it were me I go for a couple of severums, a small colony of some sort of geophagus and a shoal of congo tetras !

Have you thought of african brown knives? I think there are some rarer knives that would work in there but might need a bit of research and finding.

A black ghost knife will be fine in that tank for life. Theyt will rarely get over 15-16 inches in captivity, and while bigger is better, that tank is more than adequate, especially if the 80cm is front to back?

I just have to disagree. A 12" + fish (unless it is highly inactive) has no business being in a 5 foot tank.

I know they can be healthy in there and I know it won't stunt them, but I just don't feel that it's fair to give them so little space.

I agree with Assaye, even if it did only grow to 1ft, would you enjoy living in a room only 5 times your length?

I spent about a third of a year in my bedroom which is 4m by 3m (I am 1.8m), after I ruptured 2 ligaments in my knee and couldnt' walk for months, and I found the boredom quickly turned to relaxation :)

The BGK is currently in a bare tank at the pet store after it outgrew its previous home. I may not be able to offer a massive tank, but I can promise the fish a well furnished, well planted tank and alot of attention... :/

Cant remember 100%....your in new zeland correct?

can you acsess channa out there?
Indeed I am, good memory! I'm not sure about channa, but I'd amagine I could have one or two ordered in. What are they like to keep? :)

Also, those Keyhole Cichlids are doing great, and when I ask people which one they like most they're always a favourite! I'll have to upload some pics of them in the near future :D
