hi all never kept shrimp before but wouldnt mind they look pretty interesting and i have a spare tank so maybe i mite give it ago but i have a few questions first :)

1. would a tank measuring 12 inch x 8 inch x 8 inch be big enough for some standard shrimp? (cherry i presume)
2. wot sort of substrate do ppl use beens most tanks ive seen are pretty heavily planted?
3. would tank need heating? doenst matter if it does i have spare 25 and 50 watt heaters anyways
4. wots the cleaning regime for a shrimp tank? ie sand/gravel vacs water changes etc etc
5. wot filtration are ppl using? was thinking just a normal air driven sponge filter
6 if this is all ok wot other shrimp could i keep in that size tank?

pics of ur shrimp tank would be nice 2 please just so i can get an idea of how 2 set 1 up :)

thanx all

jen :)

hi there mate

1=tank size fine for cherrys perfect size
2= small black gravel i found best out of substrate as it brought the colour out much much more, as cherrys adapt to the colour of their background etc
3=yes better to be heated as lowest is really 18degrees
4=same cleaning changes as normal weekly water changes etc
5=air driven sponges are best as u will find alot clin to the filter and eat off it
6=u could keep expensive shrimp like crs or sumthign like bee shrimp etc

planted tanks are defo best for shrimp

cheers rock was just looking at a few diferent 1's do like the Crystal Black Shrimp look pretty cool by looks of it get 2 same size as the rest uve mentioned just that tad more expensive lol £12.99  for grade A wotever that means lol didnt know some shrimp weres so expensive lol ..... think a bit of creeping 2 the misses is due ;)

Agree although theres no real reason to heat the tank. I find they breed just as rapitly in coldwater.

there is no need to heat a shrimp tank as they are coldwater shrimps anyway (cherries)

dont get any CRS or CBS for a few months, gain experience with the hardier species first, because after all you dont want to spend £100 on 10 CRS for them all to die

cheers for the link truck thats where i got the price for the cbs didnt relise shrimp were so expensive lol yeh was thinking on a few cheaper slightley hardier species first but tank will be as mature as my most mature tank becasue i have a sponge filter in there from mnths and mnths ago but yeh do agree with trying the less expensive species first :)

I would go for eco complete as a substrate as is naturally black and great for all plants.

Heres a few older pics of my shrimp tanks (although the big one is more of a community tank).

Big tank (cherry, bumblebee, bee, tiger, rainbow, red nose, amano, palmata)
