Can you make your own breeding net?

I made my own, as the one from the store was too big for my five gallon (didn't have my ten gallon yet). I bought one of the large fish nets and some coated wirte. I simply threaded the wire through the netting to made a sort of square/box shape. Then I just threw a couple of plastic plant pieces (the branches that always fall off) in there. Viola! Next time I think I'd use a different kind of wire, as the stuff I used rusted (on the ends, where it was cut). Oh, and I simply ben the handle of the net perpendicular to the net (so the handle/net made an "L" shape), then wired it over the edge of the aquarium.

Can you make your own canopy (hood)?

I do believe you can make your own canopy/hood, but I don't know the specifics of doing so. Someone else will have to help you there.
