I have had some neons for about 3 weeks in a cycling tank. Poor kids, but they have hung in there. They seem to be growing pretty fast and I wonder how long it takes for them to reach full size and how to tell the males from the females? Some fish are bigger than others. There are 5 now (lost 3 the first week and none since although I've feared I might). Sometimes I notice one chase another one and this behavior just began a few days ago. They have gotten braver about coming to the surface to eat flakes with the gourami. They swim together sometimes, also group and watch me when I vacuum the tank, sometimes they do their own thing.

Once the tank is cycled and I move the gourami to the new tank, should I add anymore neons to the group or will they be content at 5? There are 3 corys and an otto in there too. I will get the otto a buddy when the tank is stable. 10 gallon tank. Is it normal for neons to like to ride the bubbles off the bubble wand? I didn't know if they did it for fun or there was some physical reason for it. They do it mostly at night after eating before lights out. It is the area next to the plastic log they sleep under.

Will there be room in that tank with the full grown neons, corys, and ottos to put any other small fish in there? I was thinking a middle or upper water swimmer. Not too crazy about the busy danios, but maybe something else. My mom keeps a betta as does one of my friends and they are very quiet, peaceful fish in their tanks, but I know individuals could vary. A single betta would use less resources in the tank perhaps? No rush, just getting ideas.

IMO, your 10-gallon can't handle many more fish. 5 is about the minimum shoal for neons though. Some like to play in bubbles, some swim around them. I have no idea why they do the nightly ritual at your place, but it's probably normal.
