i have 10 tetra in a 20 gallon tank, all water params good:

ph 6.6-6.8
nitrite/ammon: 0
nitrate: ~40 ppm

I happened to turn the light on one night after it had been off for 3 hours and all of the neons were clear! no neon, no red, and a little bit of blue. I was scared but when i came back home this afternoon they all had their color back. Why is this happening?

Yeah i think it was because you left the light on for a long time, neons colour tends to 'fade', or so i heard.

Nothing to worry about - this is actually normal. Many fish will lose colour at night, perhaps it's a survival adaptation to make them less visible to predators. My pencilfish actually changes it's pattern completely, developing a blotchy camouflage appearance.
