Hi!

How many Neon tetras would I be able to keep in a 45Gal tank? I want quite a few for them to really stand out.

At the mo I have 6 black neons, 1 clown loach and 2 angels

Many thanks!!

if that is all ur stocking then probably add about 15 to that list. Be careful though, add the neons large especially if the Angels aren't small.

Big angel would eat Neons for meal. So you have either not add Neons with Angel(s) or move Angels to other tank. Otherwise, you'll not have any Neons in the tank as soon as Angel grow and their mouth is big enough to take Neons if not they are already big.
This has been the classic example of "big fish eat small fish". And still people try to put them in the same tank and poor Neons have to pay for their life. :( :/
So please keep them separate.

I only put the angels in a few days ago and they are very small. From what you are saying I think a few neons might be ok for now. Ive got 2 tanks so if there are any problems i'll move the angels.

Thanks for your advice!

If the angels are small I doubt you'll have a problem, I introduced amll angels into a tank with neon years ago and there was never a problem even after the angels grew larger. If you want to play it safe you can always check your lfs for jumbo neon tetras as they get a little bigger than the normal variety, but as I said I had no problems mixing these two species

Went to my lfs today. Added 12 neons to my tank!! So far the angels havn't even been bothered. Looks like they will be ok. Although I am keeping a close eye!

I know my warning is a little late now... But try in the future to add new fish in smaller groups so you don't make a big spike in your bio-load.... Neons are on the smaller side so it shouldn't be too bad..... Good luck, I have 10 Neons and love them... :)...

Good point about having a spike in the levels!

I did think of this before buying them all in 1 go but decided to buy them all together and keep a close eye on the levels - testing every other day for the first few weeks. The tank has been cycling for approx 4 weeks now and I added the old foam filter from my other tank to the new Ehiem filter to speed things up. All levels fine at the mo!! :good: :good:
