I put a few neons in with my cories and everything is fine. They look so cool next to my black sand. :D THey actually make my cories less shy!!!

The only thing is that- they refuse to come to the top to feed. I have to stir the water a bit to get the flakes to fall before they go after them.

And even when they see a flake, if there is a piece of algea waffer on the sand for my cories - no matter how big they focus on eating that :fun:

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I don't want my little guys to starve.

i think that (but i'm not entirely sure) that neon tetras are middle swimmers so maybe that is why they don't go right to the top. mine do not do that either although i don't know about the algae waffer thing, maybe it is just tastier?

My neons are just the same, they much prefer to hang out with the Cories eating wafers than join in with the other tetras eating flake.

hi our cardinals & 2 neons are exactly the same & basically dont have a chance anywhere up near the top whilst the tank piggies (tiger barbs) are gorging themselves, but ours do pick up flake that floats down & also nibble on the algae & other catfish tabs we put in the tank & they love king british tablet treats as they get to nibble on the little bits that float off. have you tried freeze dried tubifex cubes as well?? our corys love them & spend ages swinging off the cube as it floats at the top of the tank (or fix it to a suction clip at the side lower down) & the neons get all the little wormy bits that fall off the cube, they also seem to enjoy daphinia + bloodworm (buy the frozen stuff & defrost & i chop it up so the smaller fish can manage to get some)
im sure your fish will be getting enough to eat- dont worry! :)

Mine did exactly the same and i had to make the flakes sink so they would eat. But now they have to work to get the flakes from the surface.

Just try a few floating fakes now and then so that they learn that they have to work for their food and keep doing this until they dont need sinking flakes.

Thats what i did. :)

I feed my tank live bloodworms every now and again. Sometimes the neons get some, and it's like watching a really small kid eat a really big piece of spaghetti. Takes 'em ages to finish off a worm, one gulp at a time, but there's no way they're either gonna bite it off and let a bit go, or spit it out and let anyone else have it. They may be tiny but they are stubborn little buggers! they also love daphnia and brine shrimp, live, frozen and those 'nutricious in jelly' sachet things.
