lol Legend lov the avatar. Neon tetras arent livebearers. theyre Characins. u should keep them in groups of 5 minimum, the more the better. if u keep them in less they might not shoal and theyll get stressed.

Just buy loads, well as many as you can anyway, 10 at least imo, they are such a good fish when kept in bigger numbers

i have 5 in my tank. they get up to 2 inches.

My own preference for neons is as many as I can fit without overloading the tank. For a 55 gallon with a few cories in it I would want about 45 or 50. Smaller tank, less neons. Larger tank, more neons. In a community situation I would go with at least 10.

I've got 15 in my 35 gallon at the moment and they don't always schoal mine swim around by themselves now and only group sometimes the main times they will schoal is if they get scared or a new fish or something has been added once they are comfortable they swim abit more free.
