hi ! i have 6 neon tetras and i'm pretty new to all of this - my girlfriend gave me her fishtank and i've been reading/learning like crazy. had a few fish die :( but seem to have everything under control now. it's a 10g tank, but the filter didn't seem to be providing enough oxygen, so i put in another kind of pump thing in that produces it (left over from my bros old tank) and that seems to helping WONDERS. i fed the fish (a small amount) this morning, and i notice now that 2 of the tetras have kind of 'bloated' bellies. so i'm just wondering if it's a lot of poo, or could it be something potentially bad? :\ any help would be appreciated.

p.s. this site has proven to be quite helpful so far...

thanks !

Are you able to post pics?

If they seem bloated, it might be a sign of disease. Are they swimming around normally, eating?

If you look above, to the scales point out like a pine cone?

unfortunately, i do not have a webcam... the scales are not pointed out at all. the fish are swimming around as usual and still nibbling on specs of food they find. the bloating hasn't gone down though. is it possible that they're getting TOO much oxygen? there are no live plants...

could they be pregnant?

if there were any kind of bacterial infection, do you know how i could find that out?

thanks very much for replying

Being bloatd can be a number of things first diet, what do you feed the fish, as to many dried foods can cause consipation and swim blader problems, they need frozen foods, veg in there diet, i would try some shelled peas and frozen daphnia, can they maintain there balance in the water, what does it look like when they go to the toilet, can you post test results in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, how many fish and which type.

so far i've been feeding them the flake food and few freeze dried blood worms the other day (i've only had these fish a few days). they are swimming fine, and still playful. i can't post test results as i have yet to get a test kit, but have taken the water to the local pet store where they tested it for me. the amonia wuz high, but i've taken care of that and all the fish seem very healthy and active. i read a thread from a different site that said they're tetras bellies got bloated everytime they ate and it took about 10 hrs before they went down. these tetras are VERY small. other fish in this tank are 2 zebra danios, 1 bolivian ram and 2 otto cats.

so shelled peas and frozen daphnia... are there any other kind of veggies i can give them?

thanks for the help :)

Neon tetra's are not a cycling fish as there are very sensitive to water quality so good luck, added to many fish to soon really, cucumba, peas, broc, cabbage, lettuce, sproats, but i wouldn't feed to much till the tank has cycled, just try the peas for now and try and get some frozen daphnia as it good at digesting there food, also in frozen, brimestrimp, riverstrimp, bloodworms.

the tank has actually been set up for just over a year, and so a lot of the fish were already in it. i just added 3 tetras so they would have a bigger school. i'm new to all this, but i got the fish becuz she didn't really want them anymore and i wuz interested in looking after them, so i'm learning as i go... i appreciate the help :) thank you

If the tanks been set up a year and you have ammonia along with pot-bellied tetras, I'd suspect that you are just plain feeding too much food. A handful of tetras can live on a small pinch of good flake a day. Agree with above that if you have ammonia- stop any feeding whatsoever for a few days. The fish will be better off a little hungry with better water quality.

cyprinut

thank you cyprinut, i do think the bellies are a case of overfeeing... i tried to give them a small amount, but i guess it will have to be smaller :fun: will do a famine before next feeding !

thanks a lot :)
