Hello, many queries on here lately

I am a first time neon tetra owner so forgive my questions. I have a shoal of 10 in a 160 litre. Some have seem to have gotten much plumper than the rest and assumed these were probably females full of eggs? I also understood with a ph 8 and hard water unlikely to get fry from them..

Recently noticed one in particular doesnt sparkle as much anymore or as much as the rest and also seems so much skinnier than the others. Is this something to be worried about or could it simply be old age or over breeding? They were pretty much full grown when I got them judging from info on the net and unsure if should be worried or not?

Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking

Hi there,

You will need to post pictures, because neons regularly do get pregnant, but they are also very prone to dropsy. Dropsy and pregnancy can only be told apart if we get a good look at them. I myself have 16 neons and 6 glowlights, and some died due to dropsy, and i have another 1 which is very pale and not colourful, that, im not sure why they look like that but im guessing they arent feeling 100%, so someone else will have to help you with that 1.

Thanks very much for that, will upload some pics tomorrow if they stay still long enough as they have been put to bed for now. Hope that they arent ill, water stats are dead on as been very paranoid with stats recently. Thanks again

Hmm, very hard to see look alright to me but im not the one with the fish so..... Would be best to quarentine the ones you think are sick, and treat them with internal infection medicine, and also look on the net for other medicines to use. I had the same problem with my neons and i searched neon tetra dropsy on google and i got thousands of good sites with relevant info and other people with the same problem, and they are all good sites. Good luck. Keep trying on some good pictures.

Thanks for that fish_tank0311

Well one definately is not very well. He has a whitish gray body and not very vibrant also very noticeably he has a concave belly. I am treating a tank at the moment for internal parasites. Is it worth putting him in there with them for treatment? The rest look ok though time will tell
