I just started doing the fish hobby..... I got 4 neon tetras in my 5 G tank. My friend keeps telling me to get more fishes.

Other people say they dont recommend it. About how many more neon tetras or other fishes can I have?

You can probably get a couple more tetra's. All you would need is about 2 more to create a nice effect. I think anymore and the tank would look too busy.

if the tank is new and has only been set up for a few days or so, then don't get any more fish yet. The filter needs to develop some good bacteria to break down the fish food and waste. the more fish & food in the tank, the faster the water will go off and the more problems you will have. Only feed the fish once every couple of days and do a partial (30-50%) water change each day for the first month. Make sure any new water going into the tank is free of chlorine and has a similar temperature & PH to the tank.

If the filters have been cycled (developed the good bacteria over the last month) then ignore the above and add a couple more neons.

eventually you could have 2 or 3 pygmy corydoras and 4-6 neon tetras. But that would be it and only after the filters have established.

Assuming the tank is cycled, as Colin says, then I would say have a total of 8 tetras in there.

Im his friend. I've used my 5g, (now his, he bought it) for years.

It's cycled, and heater and filter working properly.

Yes, david you should freaken put more. You got like 1k in your debt carb, or whatever. :) AND YOU WASTE LIKE HALF OF IT ON FOOD.

Kevin, each of us has our own priorities. Being able to fit more fish into a tank doesn't mean that it is needed.

yes, I know but just trying to clear up some stuff.

-- and you havent seen what he wastes his money on. -pointless stuff. :) xD
