Neon Tetra Dead

OMG, is it really true about the 4 - 6 month thing?! o_O; If so then I'm screwed, and so are my 4 neon tetras (3 of which I just bought ;) ).

I live in an area with pretty high pH water -- about 7.5 - 7.6 pH; somewhere in-between that. ;) My neons seemed to be fine, though; they USUALLY just die if I don't acclimate them properly.
Can you return the neons and get another fish? A friend of mine had all hers die (10+) and she has a large tank. . .very large, which is still cycling.

The other day I was talking to my dh and asked him if he ever had a tank and he reminded me that we had had one in our early 20s (oh yeah!) and I asked what we had in there and he said Neons. lol So, now I know why the all died ;)

When I got the dead fish from the tank, all of its fins at the back were gone.

Is this normal?

The other Neon died, along with 3 of the Guppy fish and I think the last Guppy is going the same way.

I seen the third Guppy die today, for hours the fish was swimming to the top of the water, upwards then like sinking back down as if it was dead, till the last min, kept doing that for ages. It died in thay way too.

The Characins are gunna be the only ones left by tomorrow.
