Hi,

I have had 3 neons for a long while now, but they looked lonely in the tank with just the 3 of them so I went out and bought 5 more. I introduced them to the tank over an hour, one at a time. For the first few days they were fine, but then I noticed that every day there was one going missing. I thought it may have been some other fish in the tank killing them but if it was something else other than the neons would'nt my original neons have been killed aswell.

After the first lot were killed I thought it may have been one of the bigger fish so I set up another tank for the bigger fish, but I went out and this time I only got 2 more neons, but sure enough with in a few days they were dead as well! All my water levels are good so it has me stumped. I would really like to get more neons coz they really don't look good with just the 3 of them.

If it is of any use I have 2 females and one male neon.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks toni

The tank is a 4 foot tank, about 180 litres the ph level is 7.0 and the amonnia level is 0 ppm.

The tank contains: 3 neon tetras
4 big mollys
5 half grown mollys
2 balloon mollys
3 guppys
1 eel tail catfish
1 bristol nose catfish
4 corys
4 tiger barbs
2 black widows
2 sucking catfish
2 red tail sharks

If you need anymore info just ask!

Your tank has some stocking issues, they will be quite alot of agression in your tank so anything really could be killing off your neons...
a. Depending on your mollys genders there could be alot of harrasment between them, how many males/females do you have? the same goes for the guppys.
b. With the catfish do you mean "eel catfish" or "eel tailed banjo catfish" or somthing different like "whiptail catfish"? I don't know much on oddball catfish but i havn't heard of an "eel tail catfish"(if anyone has please clue me in).

c. The tiger barbs are a problem, they are very nippy and agressive fish and not suited to the other fish in your tank as well as they are in too few in numbers to contain the agression within the group to any success, they will stress each other and other fish out and stress often leads to death in fish so you must sort this out.
d. The 2 red tailed black sharks are the next big issue- sharks do not mix, they will kill each other as they mature if they aern't already doing it now, as i said before stress often leads to death in fish and RTBS are agressive enough on their own let alone when they have another to contend with.

Im not sure on what is killing your neons as numerous things issues in your tank stocking could be contributing to their deaths, i don't mean to be a bummer or sound harsh, just trying to help out, but you must reduce/egt rid of some of the fish in your tank and then asses your neon problem  .

Ok, I just need to comment something. YOU HAVE TWO RED TAIL SHARKS IN THE SAME TANK?! THOSE THINGS ARE GOING TO KILL EACH OTHER IN DUE TIME!!!!!!! THough, I think it's your Tiger Barbs that are killing them, personally, I just think your pH level is a tad to high. Try to lower it to around 6-6.5. :)

The ph is fine as long as the neons were acclimatised properly to the tank when they were bought(i.e for 30mins or more), what will cause even more issues though is if you try to alter the ph using chemicals and will result in more neon deaths.
