just this past weekend i bought a platy. he's quite small still and i didn't notice until i got home and put him in his tank that his fin is injured (?). it looks as though his left fin is really only half a fin and he swims a little lopsided. i put fungus/antibacterial medication into the tank and also aquarium salt and he's swimming around a bit more than the first day (where he just sat along the bottom) so he seems to be doing better, but still, i really would like to know what is wrong in the first place? he's just so cute, i hate to lose him so soon.

please, if you have any tips or similiar experiences, let me know so i can help the little guy out.

The salt is a good choice. They like a bit of salt in their water. My advice is just to keep a close eye on it, maintain good water quality, keep up on WCs, don't overfeed and all will be fine. The fin will grow back pretty quickly, you'll see.
