My school runs a digital showcase where people who are good with computers enter all kinds of digital media. There are some pretty serious prizes going. My best friend and I did very well - but this year I want the Game category. Besides, a betta themed game would be really cool. Right?

So basically what I'm doing is creating animations for male and female bettas of all the major strains. I might put together a few minutes of footage to make a mini-movie, and I'm also going to make a 'care for the betta' sort of game. If I manage to improve my programming ability I might even take it to a strategy game sort of level - choose pairings, spawn bettas, sell the fry, make money, buy more bettas, spawn more bettas... I don't have room to do it in real life, so why not? I could also use it as a genetics example, which would line me up for some major science awards.

What I need then is some clear footage of bettas of various strains swimming and moving around a tank. I know some of you guys love taking videos and have some really good ones. I'm not going to rip off your fish, steal the footage or even copy them into another program and work with the footage, just watch them and get a feel for the way the fins move in strains other than the crowntail which is what I keep. I want the animations to be as realistic as possible.

It's really hard to put all the strain crosses in, there are literally too many to count. I was thinking of requiring the separation of the strains in the game, or else take out an aspect of realism and have a cross between strains result in mixed fry, not crossbred fry. (ie if you spawned a veiltail with a crowntail, some of the babies would be VT, some CT. Best I can do with the programs I have.)

Making 'flare' shots are really easy, so I can do one per strain. For swimming I can use the same basic frame loop for delta, super delta, halfmoon and over halfmoon, just slightly modifying the number of folds on the fin. Same goes for roundtail and halfmoon plakat. The others will probably need one per strain. So does anybody have videos of any of these males? The females all look quite similar, I can easily modify them by changing the length of the fins and adding the plumes on the crowntail. I'm going to leave out some other tail types like combtail, feathertail, rosetail because programming it is too much work.

Delta/Super Delta/Halfmoon/Over Halfmoon
Plakat/Halfmoon Plakat
Crowntail
Veiltail
Double tail (one of a small tail and one of a large would be best)

Any links are really appreciated. I don't care if the footage is yours or not. Like I said, I'm not going to steal it, I just want to watch it because I haven't seen most of these bettas swimming. I can't get a feel for how they move by watching them floating around in fish shop betta cups.

Thanks a lot! I'll check it out.

EDIT: Doing preliminary planning.
For each strain - 40 loops for the male, 40 loops for the female.
Total of 80 loops.
Each loop has a minimum of ten frames.
That's 800 images per strain.

Ideally I would like to make this game include all the major strains and maybe even some of the crossed strains (like halfsun). I think I might end up firing off some beta releases first though, because that will take me waaaay too long.

wow, you are doing a serious undertaking, I will try and take some stuff of my hms for you and post them.

good work so far.

Thanks! I've started another thread as a project journal. I decided it was too much work to do the delta, super delta and OHM strains - the halfmoon is pretty much the cream of the crop with the wide tail strains and I figured enthusiasts of one of the others would make do with the good old halfmoon. I might also stick to one set of images for the plakat as well. So my strain list:

Veiltail - resting image done see other thread
Crowntail
Halfmoon
Double tail
Plakat

It saves me a lot of time. The swimming alone will be approximately 800 images per strain and then I will start on things like coming out of swimming to resting, starting swimming, eating, building a bubble nest, spawning... bettas don't have 'rude bits' so I won't do what Faith did on bettatalk and censor it! lol

By the way - has anybody got photos of halfmoon, plakat and doubletail resting? I can only find photos of them flaring. What do their fins look like when they just sit in the water and do nothing?
