Is it better for a white cloud minnow (schooling fish that does not "require" heat) to be.

I ask because i have 2 male white cloud babies that were barely half and inch when i got them and they could not go into my tank since they would be swallowed by larger peaceful fish
so the were in a breeding net
they were to be with my female white cloud who is now 1 year old and 1.5"
but they are still too small for the tank (just over 1/2")
i have the choice of placing the female in a 1 gallon planted bowl (where the 2 males are now kept) or all alone in the 20 gallon tank
she is not stressed when alone, simply a loner :)

Alone in the 20g.

Maybe Pickle could visit her from time to time. ;)
very funny

i actually would have thought she would be happier in a bowl with friends
oh well,
thats why i set up this poll in the first place

I would also say 20 gal. if you have a 1 gal. with friends then it might get crowded and not as a clean environment.

Hi Pointy_kitty :)

I think it would be best to put her into the 20 gallon, rather than the small bowl with the young fry.

Fry need lots of very clean water to grow and be healthy. IMHO, if they are in that little bowl with an adult fish, the water will get polluted much too quickly for their good.

Can't you buy another adult fish to keep her company in the meanwhile? :dunno:

you can't get adults here
we have 2 stores
they both get very young fry
if you don't have experience caring for fry (let alone fish in general) then they almost ALWAYS die
they are heathy and growing
i do weekly/ sufficient water changes on all tanks and bowls (most of which are 2 gallons) in my house

1 gallon s not enough IMO, they are a shoaling fish but need room to swim around.

Why does she need to be alone in the 20gall? What else is in there?
well it has other fish
but there are no more white clouds so she is always alone
she doesn't relate to any other fish so i took you guys advice and bought her 2 new babies to school with,
but they cannot be found full grown around here
they will be swallowed by my other fish, and they can't live in a breeding net
so i have them in a 1 gallon bowl temporarily until they are at least an inch
so you are saying they will not be alright temporarily living in a one gallon? (the only bowl i have left)
or are you just saying its a no go for the female (a third fish)
these boys are half an inch and thin
they have a ton of room for now
sheesh :S
sorry to sound frazzled but what more can i do?

i just wanted to add that i don't have a problem with cheese (or anyone else)saying i should keep her alone in the 20 gallon
in fact due to the responses so far it looks like thats what i will probably do,

i was just a little unhappy to hear that a 1 gallon for 2 teensy fish is not enough
but it was in her opinion, which she has every right to

Hi Pointy_kitty :)

I have no doubts that you clean your tanks regularly.

All I was trying to say, was that fry need the water to be even cleaner than adults do to grow strong and healthy. If you keep them in a one gallon bowl by themselves you can easily keep it clean by dipping a bit out every day and replacing it with fresh water. But, if you have the female in there too, you would be doing major water changes and still the water quality wouldn't be as good as it would be without her.

I think she would be alright, by herself, for the few weeks it will take to grow the little ones big enough to join her.

np,
i took no offense whatsoever to what you said :D
i was just reasurring you
i will do the "dip a day" cleaning until they are big enough to join my girl in the tank
i suppose she can wait
but will they really reach 1" in a couple of weeks?

Hmmmm I was only saying that although the fish is small they need room to swim around and would probably benefit from having a bit of movement as well.

I didn't realise it was only temporary.

Looking at your profile now...which 20gall is it that you are thinking of putting the white cloud into? Couldn't the 2 small ones go in the top one? I see you have an angel (I am sure you know the concerns with tank sizes) but I think they'd be ok unless the angel's done it before.

duely noted about your concerns :)
the angel has not done it before (and yes that is the tank)
but i would not want to risk it
as they are barely over 1/2"
once they reach 1" i know they are fine
as Alfred (the angel) has not even attempted to snack on the 1.5" white cloud,
even when she was smaller
