Hi peeps,

ive had a browse through the forum and it is really great, there is so much info its hard for me to take in all at once!

ive just bought a new tropical tank and set it up today and it is cycling. it is 25 litres which i believe makes it about 5 gallons. so its quite small. could someone please help me in choosing the right fish for this sized tank? i was thinking maybe a group of tetras or cherry barbs?

so far i have put in a pouch of stress zyme which came with the tank and it says it will help the bio development of the filter system. i also added a few fish flakes to encourage friendly bacteria. is there anything else that i should do at this stage?

i am new to the world of tropical fish so would appreciate any help, guidelines or suggestions put forward.

thanks in advance,

Pixie

Well, you need more of a source of ammonia for cycling. A 5 gallon tank isn't good for much, but a trio of cherry barbs would work nicely. Just make sure you have a male and 2 females. Other options, well, a betta, or a dwarf puffer, or some endlers, or some ADF's... I'd say no to tetras though, they need a bit more room to swim.

I would say no to the tetras also, they do need more room and they do better if kept in 6 or more. I would go with the cherry barbs also. Although if I was just starting out i would try going with a 10 gallon tank at the least. In no time you will be wanting a bigger tank.

thank you very much for your help guys :)

i like the idea of a dwarf puffer, they are cute - i will do some research on those now. if not then i will go with 3 cherry barbs or a betta.

we do actually have a 13.5 gallon tank (well its my boyfriends really) but its at his parents house and currently out of action after a snail infestation! ahhh! (he used to have guppies). since then we have moved out and there is a little bit of a space issue so thats why we have to go for the smaller tank for now. hopefully when circumstances are better we can re-do the 13.5. :)

hey i have been looking up all the fish mentioned above and i just thought of something - my tank has a mirrored backing so will this be a problem if i get a betta?

I'm not a betta guy so I wouldnt know, but that'd be pretty funny to watch him try and fight himself :p

I might also suggest a couple dwarf gourami's for a 5 gal
