I am changing my 55 gallon freshwater tank into a saltwater tank. I dont know if i trust my fish stores around here. If anyone can tell me what i need to do in order to change it it would be a great help. Was wondering if i will need a new filtration system and if i need to do anything to clean it first. Or anything else i need to get and what you reccommend to get

Also I want to put a Snowflake eel and a Niger Trigger in there. And a couple other stuff dont know yet.

This will be my first saltwater tank and i am kind of new to this so any help will be appretiated...

-Thanks

Eforeel...welcome to the 'dark side' of the TFF page. You're going to have to start doing a lot of reading and prep prior to start up. But....getting down to the real question...biologically there is nothing to do to the tank except to clean it out. You can do that with white vinegar.

Mechanically, there is nothing to do to the tank if you are not planning to have a sump (first thing for you to read up on). A sump is a separate tank, usually beneath the main tank that contains your equipment and filter media. If you plan on having a sump, a tank needs to be drilled.

If you don't want the hassle of a sump, the tank is basically ready to go. Filtration is performed by live rock and water is circulated by pumps called powerheads. I highly recommend doing the following:

1) read the pinned threads
2) look at Paletta's book on Setting up the New Marine aquarium; Kurtz's book on starting up a mini reef
3) flip thru this forum and start looking at setups at your lfs.

Ok well i already have 2 powerheads in my tank and have this waterfall thing (srry cant remember what its called bio wheel maybe???)

So if i clean it out and put in live rock in the tank i wont have to buy any new equipment for the tank? I am not going to do the sump thing. thats awesome thanks for all the advice. If you have any suggestions on things i should get in the tank anything will be a help

-Thanks

55 is too small for a niger trigger, and some would say a snowflake eel as well, since they can grow to be 30 inches long.
