Hey there, i literally just got back from the pet store and bought a new fish along with my first piece of Bogwood and i would like to know, can i add the bogwood straight into the tank, or do i have to do something to it first.. Please reply quickly?????

-_-

You should at the very least give it a quick rinse to get rid of anything that kight be on it. I personally soak wood to get rid of te tanin. Tanin is not bad for the fish but will leave your tank looking like black tea.

To sock it just put it in a bucket (I use the bath) and cover it with water, keep replacing the water as it gets dirty until it's clearer.

This is also a good way of getting water into the woom so that it sinks.

Soak it for to release the tanins first, you can speed the process up by agitating the water with an air pump, change the water every few days until it stays clear.

Okie dookie, thanks alot, that is a real help... now to sort out me new fish...

:D

It is only a small piece of bogwood so it shouldnt take days, beside, when you first put it in soak, it should start turning the water black, or does it take time?

I have put it in soak, and all that is happening is that small lose bit of bogwood have floated to the surface and bubbles are emitting from the cracks in the wood...???

Depending on how much tannin is left it could be nearly instantly turning the water brown.

takes time. I've also found that hot water speed things up as it tends to open up the wood.
