Hello,

I was thinking about buying a small 2.5 gallon tank maybe even a 1 gallon tank to house ghost shrimp. I was looking for tank set ups for them but all I found was adding them to an existing tank.

Some info I need.

1) how many shrimp can live in a 1 or 2.5 gallon tank that has only the shrimp?
2) Since there are no left overs do I just feed them some flakes?
3) how often do I feed them?
4) Do they need a filter?
5) Would Stress Coat benifit them?
6) Are live plants essenstial or can I get buy with silk?
7) If I can have multiple shrimp do they all need their own cave to shed their shell in?
8) is all this possible?

Thanks,
Jason

1) one - two in a 1G, two - three in a 2.5
2) Flakes, sinking pellets..whatever you have on hand
3) Every 2nd day would be good enough
4) Filter and heater would be needed
5) Treat the water to remove chlorine and such
6) Live plants may be better, but if you light is weak silk will do just fine
7) Shrimp will not bother other shrimp after shedding, it is fish you have to watch

some iodine may help to after they shed...look for marine iodine by Kent

Hope that gets you started !!

:)

1. 2-3 in a 1g.... 3-4 in a 2.5
2. Flakes, algae wafers, sinking catfish pellets, shrimp, etc.
3. Every other day, though they can go for a while without food.
4. Yes... and a heater.
5. Stress Coat works well to remove chlorine/chloramines from the water before you add it to the tank.
6. Live plants are best... #1 being Java Moss.
7. As long as there are no fish present, they don't need any place to hide. Shrimp don't attack each other... although they will eat their dead tank-mates. Lol... they don't call them scavengers for nothing.

This is very possible and would be a fun tank to watch. The shrimp love to roam up and down the sides of the tank looking for food, and will come to the surface of the water to grab flakes. :)

This is great. Thanks for all the info.

Two more questions

1) while a filter is no problem a heater small enough for a 2.5 gallon is. I thought the smallest heaters were 25 watts. Are there smaller?

2)Do I need to cycle the tank before adding the shrimp? I know use something to remove chlorine but does it need to cycle?

Thanks again,
Jason

Well I know that everyone says that you need to cycle your tank first, yet with my shrimp tank I did not cycle it and its been up for over a month and half now and it all has been good. THe shrimp just had their fry and they are all hidding in the java moss....
