Hi, I have a female black molly whose scales are not laying flat on her body. If you look down on her the scales are actually sticking out. Fins look fine, only other thing is I think she is pregnant and she has a white spot (flat) on her anus. Does anyone know if the scale thing is because of pregnancy or sickness? Please Help!!!!!!

Could be either. She might be pregnant or have dropsy. I'm sorry I couldn't be more certain but I would assume pregnant over dropsy.

that is drospy the scales doesnt stick out how long have you had this mollie you sure need to get her out of that tank and put her in a hospital tank. I keep mollies and i have never seen the scales stick out before. Is she staying in one place all the time?

I've had her for at least a month or so. I have her in a breeder net now and she pretty much stays in one place. She is eating but not as much as usual. If she was fine before, could she just all of a sudden develop dropsy? I haven't added any new fish or done anything different than I usually do. I just don't have a clue. I need help, this is more upsetting than I thought it would be!

my betta got that and died to I dont think your other fish can get it but I wouldnt take that chance if it were me. I think it is supposed to be caused from poor water conditions but my bettas water was always kept clean. what are your readings ammonia nitries and nitrates. I will tell you what I done with my betta and he winded up dying anyways once it is noticably it is most of the time to late I put him in a little epsom salt I forgot how much mabey someone here can tell you the amount and pennicillion I am not a vey good speller either. I would try that for about three days and if it didnt show any signs of improvement I would think about putting it down if I were you because it is a awful death I sure dont want to have to go threw that againg watching my fish die and feel so helpless . I am sorry to have to tell you this but I have been threw it before and I know what you are in for.

Sometimes they get dropsy when they are elderly. Also, a fish might have a poor immune system that is nothing to do with how you've cared for them, but from before you bought them. With bettas, over-breeding and betta cups may be part of the reason they don't live so long in captivity.

But if they have a shorter life, at least it will be a good one ;)

Thanks for all the help. I did some research and believe that it was dropsy. By this afternoon she was barely moving so I went ahead and put her out of her misery. Very sad day but thanks again.
