I have had to do this before in my Rekord 60 and I left it for 1 month, after this I tested my water once a day for a week to see if everything was running OK and if all of the nitrites e.c.t had settled. :) hope this helps, Perry :D

You need to run the two filters in tandem for at least six weeks. Are you going to be removing the old filter altogether?

If so, it might be easier to pack the media from the old filter (cut up if neccessary) into the new filter. Then, as the bacteria colonise the new media, you can remove the old; say one piece every month or so.

Removing the old filter without moving any of the media to the new one is always a little risky, as you don't know how much bacteria will be growing in the new one.

If the old filter has a large enough colony of bacteria to cope with all the wastes from your fish, there will be very little bacterial growth in the new filter, as there won't be any food for them; the ones in the old filter will be eating all of it.

Hope that makes sense you; do say if it dosn't!

I have removed a second filter after a mere 6 weeks and had to finish up a fish-in cycle in the tank. Instead I would suggest that you simply place the new filter on its tank and clean the old filter in that tank afterwards. When I approach things that way, the new filter usually cycles in a week or less in a fishless cycle. If you are merely replacing one filter with another, leave them running in parallel for at least 2 months and closely monitor your chemistry when you remove the old filter. Your new filter may or may not be up to the job by then.
