Need Help With Under Gravel Filter

Yea can you people please tell me how and under gravel filter works? i've had my tank hooked up and going for the past 3 days, and hav one neon tetra ( yea i know, but i need to let it do the water cyclin thing)

i have a filter wich sucks water into an outside container then pumps back in,(iv got filter wool and carbon in that) and the under gravel filter is going but im not sure if its put together properly

oh yea, all this stuff is second hand and pretty old, dunno if that makes a difference. I'm talking like 15 years old

Airline from air pump to stem in uplift tube attached to air stone; plate sh. cover bottom completely. The bubbles produced in the uplift tube circulate the water, pulling it from the bottom, providing a nice oxygen supply for the biological bacteria.

The airstones should be replaced, make sure pump's working well.

Neon prob. not best choice for cycling--and just one should take some time I'd imagine--may want to return him and look into a fishless cycle (pinned topic somewhere). Or add a cycle enhancer...Biospira supposed to cycle in a day, seems to have good reviews. Just some other options.
